Diversity

What is Diversity and Why is it Important? - The definitions vary as much as the many diverse characteristics of people.

DIMENSIONS:

  • Personality: individual likes & dislikes, values, and beliefs. Personality is shaped early in life - influenced by all the other dimensions

  • Internal dimensions: aspects over which we have no control. This dimension is where many divisions between people exist. It is the first thing we see in other people, (e.g. race or gender) and on which we make assumptions and base judgments.

  • External dimensions: aspects over which we have some control & might change over time. This layer often determines, with whom we develop relationships.

  • Organizational dimensions: aspects of culture found in a work setting.  Issues of preferential treatment and opportunities for development or promotion are impacted by the aspects of this layer
