About this Scholarship / Model

The Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoLT) replaces what Boyer refers to as the Scholarship of Theory into Practice – aligned with pedagogical and ontological dimensions. This requires the creation of interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary and inter-professional learning and teaching opportunities and sites to facilitate SoE for social justice and transformation towards SI.

Innovative methodologies for teaching and learning must be developed, calling for engaged scholarship, so that the integration of theory and practice can be facilitated and aligned with student graduate attributes. Additionally, there needs to be an appreciation for teaching and learning methods, utilised by faculties that are prepared to facilitate learning that acknowledges students’ prior learning and knowledge (indigenous knowledge).

A paradigm shift is required to transform teaching and learning with the purpose of SI grounded in a mode 2 approach to learning and teaching for co-creation of knowledge. This ensures alternate ways of framing problems, and challenges could be incorporated, deliberated and evaluated in the curriculum. Additionally such an approach would be dependent on reciprocal partnerships not just between the student and scholarly communities, but more importantly with ‘off campus’ communities (e.g. civil society as well as the public and private sector).

Examples include, but are not limited to: Formal Education: curriculum-based volunteering, service learning, work integrated learning; and Informal Education: short courses, continuous education courses, workshops, seminars/webinars, winter schools, public information networks, conferences.
